Hi, I've been lurking for a week or two, thought it was time to
contribute.
We live just South of Carlisle, main interests are pipes, particularly
Scottish/northumbrian smallpipes.
I found a very interesting book in Dillons in Perth this summer; it may
be of interest to some members of the list and I've not seen any other
reviews.
It's called The Book of the Bagpipe; it's by Hugh Cheape and its
published by Appletree (ISBN 086281706-4)
It's a small hardback, priced at 6.99. It's a very well-written brief
history of pipes (not just GHB), but what makes it outstanding is the
excellent selection of illustrations of pipes and pipers from all
periods and most areas.
In a number of cases the pipes are being played 'backwards'; right hand
on top and bag under right arm; mostly these are engravings and I
suppose might have been reversed somehow, but some are paintings (which
could be the result of a reversed photo); or of course that could be how
they were actually played.
Any comments on this?
