Poursuivant to this one, is there any plaqueing scheme in Scotland? The
camera company Olympus sponsor a plaque scheme with the Royal Photographic
Society, where 'blue plaques' are attached to the birthplaces/workplaces etc
of historic photographers from time to time. In Kelso we have 'toun trail'
plaques but they are quite hopeless and based only on architecture; there
should be one on the house where Scott stayed as a child, one on the villa
which James Ballantyne built - etc - but there aren't any, just the usual
'this way to the Abbey' notices.
These plaques can't be very expensive, and surely some large org in the
financial sector would support them - to mark locations for writers, poets,
musicians, artists, political figures, scientists, explorers etc. I have
seen individual plaques but no recognisable, widespread programme.
