When I visited, I was told it was named by Dutch improvers who
were draining the land, "lake" being Dutch for a fen or swampy
area. However, the charming boatman who told me this also
admitted to making up some pretty funny stories for tourists who
asked dumb questions. Of course that couldn't possibly include
me :-)
