There is a dark little poem, presented as a graveyard inscription with no explanation, in William Gass's novel "Omensetter's Luck" (set in some chilly and Scandinavian part of the American Midwest): They stole from me my wife, stole from me my mother, and stole from me my life, lest I should love another.
