I'm extremely short of time - this week five of my classes finish, and
tonight it's the end-of-year concert. Immediately afterwards I'm off to
a mandolin tutors' weekend near Biggar. Anyway, if I had more time I'd
like to write a fuller review of this, but in the meantime...

This is another terrific piece of work from Jack. Hundreds of tunes,
clearly displayed, you can hear each of them, and they're also supplied
in ABC and MIDI format. Each tune is annotated with as much background
as you'll want.

I've often wondered how so many Scottish tunes arrived in Irish
repertoire, especially as they've been transcribed into other keys. A
look at some of the flute collections in here may provide an answer, as
there are many tunes changed into flute-friendly keys which correspond
to their Irish settings. Jack mentions a sudden de-popularisation (is
that a word?) of the flute in Scotland and wonders whether there was an
influx of second-hand flutes into Ireland at the same time; I wonder,
if that's true, whether Scottish flute tutors went with them?

I'd recommend this latest CD-rom as a major publication. If I had any
criticism, I'd have a link at the top of each chapter to the tune
indexes. As it is, when you look at a tune and go back to the chapter,
you have to scroll down through the text to get back to the index. A
small gripe for an otherwise faultless presentation.
