The last time I looked at this in some detail (about 3 yrs ago), there were
2 open source projects looking at videoconferencing but neither had a
working version for Linux (Solaris/Irix) and both operated on a point to
point basis as opposed to true video conferencing
(bandwidth!bandwidth!bandwidth!).
I'm about to have another look at the topic in connection with VOIP. There
are a couple of opensource projects running on Linux designed for switching
realtime (ish) multimedia streams (telephony) - bayonne and asterisk. ISR
that at least one of them has an H323 gateway (isn't there also an
opensource H323 gateway somewhere?). I aked about VOIP on Linux at the last
meeting but nobody seems to have tried it.
A VOIP network at the install day might impress the punters. But I digress.
It depends what you're trying to do:
Streaming broadcast video.
- multicast IP, format isn't defined but mpeg gets used a lot. Not tried
myself.
Point to point video telephony
- whatever hardware / software you can find that works. H323 is one of the
standards. AIR MS Net meeting (unusually for MS) did conform reasonably
well to the ITU specs.
Multi point Videoconferencing
