In a machine that's not doing a lot, I can believe that - but a word of
caution (a true story..!)
I work as an IT Engineer, so I regularly visit clients to fix problems
with servers etc. One day about 3 years ago, I got a call from a client
who was having strange problems with a NetWare server, they'd lost
several files, some of which were system files, causing NetWare to
ABEND.
I went out, yanked the files off of a backup (with a bit of cheating),
got the server running and left. The next day, they called back, quite
upset, because their server had ABENDed again, and wouldn't reboot.
Again I went out, and noticed severe corruption on the hard disk. I
thought it best to fit a replacement, so I took the top off of the
Server, to find molten plastic goo everywhere - and that the hard disk
casing had actually started to melt.
On closer inspection I discovered that the PSU fan had stopped working,
the Heat Sinks on the regulators in the PSU had leeced away enough heat
that the PSU didn't blow up, but the extra heat had caused various
things to melt.
So... If the machine isn't under heavy load, you should be OK - if it
is, Try it without the fan (as already suggested), but keep a **very**
close eye on it for a while, to make sure nothing nasty is happening!!
