I'll prefix this by saying I haven't ever used cable-modem, or DHCP, but
both broadcast addresses are equivalent: it should be the subnet-directed
broadcast, but also it shouldn't matter.

255.255.255.255 is the limitied broadcast address, it's never forwarded by
a router. Typ. used when you don't know your net. addr and subnet mask.

netid.subnet.255 is the subnet-directed broadcast; which, if you're
currently on the subnet is the same as the limited broadcast addr.

The only difference between the two some neanderthal tcp/ip stacks don't
route replies to the limited broadcast address correctly.

I suspect something else is wrong.
