I've got Linux running on the ADSL connection in one of our units and its
wonderful!!!!
http://www.linuxdude.co.uk is a brilliant resource for setting up the ADSL
modem. When you're online, the device is just like a regular dialup device.
i.e ppp0 therefore, you can set up IP Masquerading as if you were using a
regular modem.
Apparently, there are open-source apps available for speedtouch that result
in a much cleaner operation, but i haven't been able to get time to
configure these and install. Needless to say that when using Alcatel's
drivers, when you get disconnected, you have to unplug the frog, kill the
connection and mgmt software, and then reinitialise the mgmt software, plug
the frog back in and then bring up the ppp0 link!!! What a load of
palaver!!!
One thing i would watch for is to make sure that your distribution has the
script /sbin/ifup since the USB hotplugging will not work without it.
Im not too hot on the firewall side of things myself so I can't really offer
any help on that side.
If you do need any help on the configuration, give me a shout

Subject: [scottish] ADSL/USB
Morning all,
got ADSL installed yesterday, it's great, I'm loving the broadband
revolution.
Problem is that the USB modem use PPoPa which I know nothing about, and to
tell the truth I have never used anything more complicated than a mouse
plugged into a USB port (under Linux anyways).
So I'm putting some feelers out to find out if anyone has any advice on
setting up a NAT server running Linux.
I downloaded both ISO images for Mandrake 8.0 (kernel 2.4 I think). Anyone
got any ides on the next steps?
I'm looking for info on the following topics:-
SpeedTouch modem drivers
USB Config and running
PPoPa
MASQ under 2.4 (I've heard it can do full NAT so DCC would work on private
to public side)
Port forwarding (use bizarre ports so that an incoming connection on port X
of the external side would be forwarded to port 23 of a machine on the
private side of the network)
and general advice on firewalling under 2.4
I don't want much do I?
Chrs,
IWD
