Hi
so, if i don't have the wrong end of the stick. is it just a case of compiling the
video4linux subsystem adn usb support into the kernel or loading the modues? i don't
need to go get any 3rd party patches?

I've used both a Creative WebCam III (based on ov511) and a Philips
6somethingtysomething. They both have drivers in recent kernels
(indeed, the ov511 has been supported for ages).

Trivial to set up if you're comfortable compiling a kernel. For all I
know, current distributions have the modules ready for you and you don't
even need to do that much.
