When you installed Mandrake did it detect the ram, try booting the 
mandrake installation  cd, and going through the stages until you get to 
the bit it asks for security level and exact memory amount, if it sees 
it there but not when you  boot normally, then my guess would be the 
kernel needs recompiling, this is only  a guess, I know you can specify 
the exact  amount on  said screen, i dont know what  effect this has on 
the actuall installation but it may help.
