'fraid I don't know either.

Try removing the "mem=" bit from append and adding the line as part of the
LILO prompt (doing ctrl+X as neccessary). If that doesn't alter the
/proc/cmdline, try changing to a newer kernel: unlikely to help, but you
never know.
