Unix/Linux knows about stuff like daylight savings time and timezones. On 
my RH box there is a link:
         lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           24 May  5  1999 localtime 
-> ../usr/share/zoneinfo/GB

While the hardware clock is always in GMT, the displayed time (and that 
used for cron & at) is automatically adjusted.
