My Linux book says it can happen and I tried the various fsck options
it suggests. I'll keep playing with it, there isn't anything
important on it, I keep that elsewhere, so it doesn't matter what
happens. It's just for fun and to avoid Windows (which is fun in
itself).

The machine has a working Windows partition, would it be possible to
mount the Linux partition from Windows and repair it?

Windows XP = eXPerimental or eXtraProfits.
Make your choice, you're going to end up paying for it anyway.
