try lsof |grep <zip device>
and see whats locking the file. It could be vmware has locked something.
Im not quite sure how you have linked the device and how you are
accessing it in vmware so im not able to help any more, useful
information would be:
more information on how you have linked the drive to your home dir,
how you are accessing the drive in vmware.
Note:
Vmware allows you to connect the parallel port to the vmware machine, i
have had problems with accessing the port, but when it works it works
like the port is physically connected to the vitual machine in full
ecp/epp mode.
have a look in the settings, you can of course map the device to a file
etc.
