Thanks for the tips on forcing a umount. I resorted to the crudest of tactics to get it working ( before the better tips had arrived ). I sent VMWARE to suspend mode and closed VMWARE altogether. Even then Samba ( which you were correct as to the cause of the problem ) had hold of the zip disk. A reboot of the machine allowed the zip disk to be changed and then un-suspend VMWARE - voila! a changed zip disk.
