I don't know if any remember these, but the answers were: 1. It wasn't anything to do with the file permissions, but with access permissions to the ftp directory. Although the application logged in to the ftp directory successfully to list its comments, you needed to log in again when you actually downloaded anything.
2. I couldn't work out a way to automatically generate symbolic links on a remote server using ColdFusion (I believe it might be possible using Perl, but my knowledge of Perl is minimal to non-existent).
