Just to clarify this point...

CUPS does indeed provide failover of "print queues", but, not AFAICT printers 
themselves.

It's possible to attach the same printer to several queue servers, but, if 
this printer were to go AWOL (which I think is what Colin is asking), then, I 
don't believe that CUPS can cope with this, but, I'm not sure if the 
advertised load-balancing features of CUPS would be intelligent enough to not 
forward requests.

Print serving isn't really my bag :)
