        Might be better to avoid java, since browser support for it is
variable and some people (such as myself) never turn it on...

        I don't have useful suggestions for web design companies (too busy
to do it myself too) but when you come to look for hosting a good option
is to use ukshells.co.uk, who provide a Linux shell account and web
hosting as a package for about 90 quid p.a.  James (of piku.org on the
Linux Admin list) suggested them to me and I have been well pleased with
their service.  They have the advantage that you can control the web site
*and* all the possible email addresses associated with your site's domain,
and you can upload stuff by secure shell.  This might appeal to whoever
you get to design and script your site.
