...gives some clues. I used mbx2mbox for a one-off translation some time
ago, with no problems. I don't know about writing back to them.

This is very icky. The nice way to do it would be to have the mail on a
second machine, running an IMAP server which could then be accessed by
either a Windows or Linux-based client without worrying about local
mailbox formats.

You may be able to get away with this after all though; there's several
capable IMAP servers for Linux, and I'm sure at least one of them will
compile and run on Windows also [0]. If the mail is kept on the Windows
partition in mbox or maildir format, both Windows and Linux-based
servers could be configured to serve it to local clients.

Though of course, your Linux client could use them directly - so in
short this is a kludge manner of reversing the problem and finding a way
for Outlook Express to read mbox folders :-)
