The solution below is what happened to me after an upgrade, but all was hunky dory once the fstab was corrected

Hi Michael, Ok, I am assuming ( bad move usually) that what happened is you changed the hardware, but didn't adjust /etc/fstab. If so, you have probably swapped /dev/hdb with /dev/hdc ( or similar ), so partitions are not where the operating system expects them to be.
