Have a look at the X error log - it should explain why the server is 
crashing [assuming it is attempting to start in the first place].

I found my SuSE 7.3 one in /var/log/XFree86.0.log, but yours may be 
elsewhere.

(You may also want to look in your home directory for .xsession-errors, 
but that relates more to applications using the running server rather 
than a crashing server)
