What do you make of this? A Fairly Advanced Answer, in terms of things.
Although I did get access to the site from Konquerer using a Mozilla protocol, so their security is not as tight as it should be. I'm still trying to stick my meter readings in though ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: SP Ref:*****-21, CaseID: 3**** Date: 18 May 2002 09:59:54 +0100 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear Mr Deane Thank you for your reply. When designing the Scottish Power website we decided to focus on the majority of the online community and make the site as functional and secure for these users as possible. As these users are mostly new users we wanted to make the site as easy to use and follow as possible and some of the features we wanted to offer we could not provide through the Unix/Linux Operating Systems. Although Unix is a well-established and widely used OS it is mainly used on servers and business machines rather than home computers. This is due to the OS being very specialised and not very user friendly. We are aware of the development of the Linux OS with home users but at present this is still a very specialised market and very much in its infancy. Linux; like all OS's, is not perfect and to modify the website at this time to support such a small percentage of the online community would mean that we would have to compromise in the current functionality and security features which the site currently offers. For example we are soon hoping to launch an interactive help section. This uses features that Windows only offers and will make the customers experience allot simpler and much more enjoyable. Unfortunately Linux compatibility cannot offer services like this. The site however is in its infancy at present and we are hoping to develop it in future to provide this service to all platforms. I am sorry for any disappointment this may cause and if you wish to be taken from the online service I will process this for you. When you say security Issues, what do you mean?=20 Unix is the most secure operating system out there, that is why 90% of = the=20 worlds FTP and HTTP servers are run on them, using Apache, like yours I = would=20 imagine. Even Microsoft use Linux on their HTTP servers because there = own=20 operating system is not as good as has major security flaws. Surely it would take a small adaption to allow for IE and Netscape = users,=20 therefore allowing myself to access the system? Also in Linux we can use Netscape, which is just as secure as its = Windows=20 counterpart. =20 As for functionality, again could you elaborate. > Please advise how you would wish to continue and I would be happy to = help. I will wait until I have heard back from you again, before I let you = know what=20 i prefer to do Your prompt reply is very much appreciated, and shows the high customer = service levels which I have always received as a customer of Scottish = Power --=20 Phil Deane http://www.MiracleExpress.force9.co.uk ************************************************************************ This e-mail is intended solely for the person or organisation to which it is addressed.
