Are you using a screen saver?  It probably isn't saving your screen!
But it is almost certainly the cause of the problem.  All that
processing power to move silly graphics around the screen of a monitor
that is switched off!

I don't know what wander is, but I'm willing to bet that it is a
screensaver.  And I'm also willing to bet that it is one that asks X to
do an awful lot on its behalf.

If you really want a screen saver....use one that just blanks the
screen.  No processing overhead and it might actually have some benefit
to your monitor.
