Thank you to everyone who has responded to my question. That list is a big help.
I've already started reading "The Non-Designer's Design Book" on Safari. It's a wonderful example of how good design can convey a lot of information clearly, concisely and painlessly. When I first scanned it I thought "There's not all that much here", but there is much more than meets the eye at a first quick read. I'm looking forward to reading some of the other recommendations.
