John, Since you are on amd64 you should try to follow source package rebuild instructions at http://debian.scribus.net. If they are not clear then tell me and I'll improve them. If you can run a ix86 package then just install from our repository. I maintain both 1.3.3.x and 1.3.4+ package in the Scribus Team's repositories. Regards, Alex.
