Hello Matt, I have installed several HP printers on Linux Ubuntu with ease. I never had to install a PPD file - although the option to install a PPD is present. It seems to me that Debian should be similar.
Can you find the HP Device Manager in your software and see what it says about your printer? (It is installed by hplip) Sorry I can say more from a distance. This is a bit off-topic, but, for printing from Scribus I have an HP2055dn, which I see from the Scribus documentation is actually a recommended printer. I can print fine from Windows, but I can't install the printer in Linux. It seems the missing component is the PPD file. I installed HP’s hplip utility and it detects the printer, but then it can't install the printer because it needs the correct PPD file.
