Posting To List: Sent: Monday, May 11, 2015 9:08 AM Subject: Re: Patterns Of Focus Problems
Hi Rick, I did not do the upgrade, for I decided to give the notebook back to my daughter; since I had originally purchased it for her in December 2012. I was told it is an upgrade, but I think you have to look for it, I was not told the clear way from the HP guy; I had to force them to fix it because of repeated failures. Also, I did not discuss that part with the beta tester but he will be coming to my house and I will know more than. My grandson will do the install and will know then unless Frank comes first; Connor is a straight A student in high school. About Jim, the HP manager for the tech group I had requested because of all the issues since I had complained to the CEO office of HP on how they treated my daughter. He said that 8.1 was not a good idea to upgrade to and was not given a reason, unless it is a driver issue; for HP seems to not update them. He said that I should go to the 10 upgrade. All I know is the Microsoft account would always lock up the notebook I had, and don't know if Jim has a notebook. I guess the question to ask is what Classic View settings Jim has and go from there. In other words, is it Windows 7, XP or what? After getting back the HP a second time the disk had to be cleaned with a Windows reset before getting Windoweyes not to lock up and I had no problems as long as I stayed with the Local Account and did not try the on-line account again after that. I am using DSL and Jim may be using Road-Runner, which is a lot faster and that might be my issue. So, anything is possible and I did not install 9.1 which may also be Jim's success for I did not load the WE 9 version because of the hotkey changes; which may be the reason why Jim does not see the issues since some stuff seems to be done on a virtual mode in 9. So, time to end the thread at this point unless someone has a solution. It may have something to the word "graphic" getting spoken from time to time. It almost sounds like something is there, a dialog or graphic or pop up or something but I don't know how to identify what the "graphic" is or what it may be related to. Perhaps is the graphic pops up or is trying to get read it causes a temporary focus issue when WE tries to read a form or change focus in normal ways. I don't know how to identify the graphic to see if it is related to the other issues since the word graphic is read and then focus continues to whatever the actual focus is on or should be on. Anyway, it sounds like this is a problem that you guys arent experiencing so thanks for the heads up. I am using a windows 8.1 computer with window-eyes 9.1. I am not seeing any of the problems described below. I am signed in with a Microsoft account. I am using a hp laptop. As I said I am not seeing any of these problems. -----Original Message----- From: Scripting [mailto:scripting-bounces+jgrimsby=roadrunner....@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of LB via Scripting Sent: Sunday, May 10, 2015 10:14 AM To: Rick Thomas; Window-Eyes Scripting List Subject: Re: Patterns Of Focus Problems Hi Rick, Download Windows 10, it is free. I encountered almost the same problem inside Windows 8 in general. It seems to slow down, stop and think, then move back into normal mode. Windows 8.1 made it worse; HP techs said do not do that upgrade from Windows 8. If Jaws has no problem then it is probably how Windoweyes obtains focus on a window. I had a long talk with a Windows8-10 beta tester and Microsoft has changed many things, including the stop of using end tags on the Internet. Which I found out when writing the next version of my Breaking News program, which resolved those issues not knowing what had changed; which I probably should upload the latest version since it has been more than a year I had uploaded it. I guess you should also make sure you are in local sign-in mode and not the web mode for that will surely cause a crash, especially with the WE program. Also, I have been told you can download the Windows 10 from the Microsoft web store for free since it is actually a bug fix of Windows 8. I suggest you do that and see if it works better. Bruce Sent: Sunday, May 10, 2015 6:00 AM Subject: Patterns Of Focus Problems Hi Scriptors: After using WE for some time now with MS Windows 8.1 I have noticed a pattern to some problems. In my in-house Microsoft Visual Studio Developed project WE has trouble holding or finding focus on a Master Detail form with a MenuBar. When I open the menu bar and right arrow WE might read File View File View File View Edit File View file view edit sorts etc... It reads the first couple of menus like the other ones are not there for a few times then might pick up another menu and so on until they are all read but sometimes goes back to the first 2 menus only if I keep arrowing around the Menu Bar, sometimes it works pretty much correctly if I go slow. When I try to down arrow through the Menu Items in one of the menus we may start reading the first few menu items then lock up until I tab or alt tab to change focus to another control and back again. Then it is a struggle to get back into the menu and find a given menu item as described above. Sometimes reading through the ListBox using the arrow keys WE just locks up. Sometimes I might hear the word graphic spoken before it locks up, most times not. Note that sometimes WE works fine but lately it is getting worse and worse. Always When I LogOn to my computer after letting it go into sleep mode WE stutters on the Password like Sta star sta star sta star sta star etc as I type each letter. Sounds like it is trying to read then ReRead the word star cutting off speech in the middle of trying to speek the word twice. Also, after logging on this way my Outlook messages wont read and the last time even Internet Explorer wouldnt read, just ping ping trying to read using the arrow keys in both cases - web problem for WE? Sometimes I hear things spoken that are not in a focused object I am trying to either alt-tab to or otherwise navigate to. Now, all this speaks of WE trying to read more than it should, perhaps reading the entire dom for each keypress or some "hidden" object(s) that are causing WE focus and, or, reading problems? I dont know but this seems to be hinting at some type of problem related to WE trying to find the correct item to hold focus and thus speak. None of these problems are exhibited by JAWS - I have tested them out with the alternate reader to ensure it was not a Microsoft problem. Note that my past experience, postings, on Visual Studio problems fall into this focus problem category as well and that the Visual Studio problems are also not present in JAWS or, for that matter, in a couple of other screen readers I usually have to fall back on. So, these problems may be a result of trying to read the entire dom or WE getting lost in the middle of trying to position itself and allowing focus to get mixed up during this process somehow like trying to handle some hidden object(s) or something else that impacts focus temporarily and, sometimes, causing unresolvable focus problems? While this all is indeed problematic the reason for this posting is to help identify, perhaps, the source(s) of the many problems WindowEyes is having lately so dont take it personally guys but see if you can add to the analysis. Perhaps the WE Staff will have a light bulb moment if they see a pattern and recognize something from their deep knowledge of the WE code base. I posted to the talk list to see if anyone has noticed these types of problems as well but not so much detail just in case they can add something relevant. Note that if I go really slow sometimes some of these problems don't crop up so often but sometimes they still do.
