Hey Scott,

Right before RailsConf, I installed Ubuntu on my Dell. I had tried Kubuntu a
week before, but found that it was practically the same user experience as
when I had tried it 3 years ago. Ick!

Personal feelings aside, I would go with Ubuntu 8.04 (with Gnome). I have
found it one of the easiet OS's to work with, second only to OS X, and they
have alot of great new features. Very impressive. Highly recommended.

Here are some good addon's for Ubuntu to ease the Rails transition:

Avant Window Navigator
Geany Text Editor (haven't played much with it, but hope to soon!)

My only beef with it was that Firefox 3 Beta 5 came as default, and it's not
ready for primetime IMHO for web devers. I had to install Firebug through
apt-get just to get it to play nice, but it's still a tad bit buggy, even
after Firefox RC2 was released this week.

If anyone wants to go the Hackintosh way, this was a good link:

But yeah, Ubuntu Hardy Heron with Gnome all the way! Shoot me an email if
you have any more questions on getting a Linux dev environment setup.

Regards,
Adam
