OK. How do I handle an rpm package on OS X? (The Generic Linux
version is an RPM package.) Also, I guess I'd have to figure out what
kind of compile flags I'd need for compiling to 64-bit, etc. I'm
definitely getting in over my head here...

afaik linux source is the same as any source. if you want to compile
from source the "generic linux source" is all you need. That said,
you should checkout homebrew which will compile it for you. A lot of
