I'm using acts_as_audited in a Rails 2.3 project with success. I remember investigating paper_trail at the same time and found it lacking in one area, but don't remember what it was.
I know this seems silly, but one other thing that turned me off to paper trail is that the name of the "actor" of any given action is "whodunit". Seriously!? "whodunnit"!?
