Hey gang, I am coming down to LA RubyConf on the 4th, and the SD Ruby meeting is just a few days before that, so it would seem rude not to stop by.
I left San Diego about a year-and-a-half ago to work for New Relic up in Portland and I want to give a little bit back to the fantastic SD Ruby community. So for starters New Relic will be happy to buy a few rounds at the pub after the meeting and I'll come loaded with plenty of trial codes and hopefully some shirts and other crap. But in addition, I'd like to present some of the things I've learned in the last 18 months. I have several things that I can think of that I'd like to talk about, but the question is, what do people want to hear about? Here are some possibilities, just let me know: 0) *WTF? How do you handle 1 million requests per minute on just 10 servers?* This would be a general technical talk about how we scaled our environment over the last four years, with emphasis on MySQL, data storage and Keep It Simple. I'll hit some quick Rails and Java points too, but mostly I'm thinking about performance architecture. 1) *So, you've become a manager. Now what?* It happens to a lot of us: you're doing a good job as an engineer, you've been around the company for a while, and BAM! you get "promoted". Well, it turns out that management isn't that different from engineering. Which is to say, you can't just expect that because you're smart you'll be good at it. Uniquely among companies that I have worked at, New Relic actually works on developing this skill set, so I'd like to pass on some of the things I've learned. I promise there won't be any company loyalty song or Six Sigma BS. 2) *I am a New Relic, ask me anything.* Hey, maybe you just want to know how the hell to get custom errors working in New Relic, what "IO Utilization" is in Server Monitoring, or why we're jamming your Twitter stream with "promoted tweets" all of a sudden. I'm more than happy to just answer random questions about our product or company. 3) *Just shut up already, etc.* I'll need a little bit of time to come prepared, so send your feedback and I'll iron out the details this week. Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to the trip, I'll see you guys on Thursday the 2nd! -Nic Benders P.S. We are giving away a free pass to LA RubyConf if anyone still needs one, check our blog for details. - http://blog.newrelic.com/2012/01/25/want-to-go-to-la-ruby-conf-get-your-free-pass-here/ -- SD Ruby mailing list [email protected] http://groups.google.com/group/sdruby
