As one who made the decision long ago never to become a manager (and
no regrets), this is a great topic for those who are not managers, but
might be asked to become one. Best to have an answer and a plan for
how to become a good one if the answer is yes, while keeping a Plan B
for transitioning back if that might be of interest. Some love
managing. I suspect many don't know until they try it.

While becoming a manager is not completely a one-way door, the longer
one stays there, the more painful the transition back can be. And
often enough I hear those who have become managers say that they have
to give the fun work to those they manage. So make it a deliberate
choice, not just the consequence of a promotion.

Would be nice to see a little more about career path issues at SD
Ruby. Good start.
