I don't work much with RoR any more (mostly do Python/Django for work :'( ), but I've moved to API-only backends.
Front-end is always a SPA hosted on Netlify (easy SSL, automatically get all your assets gzipped on a CDN). Keeps my Javascript/Coffeescript out my Ruby/Python and vice versa. For frameworks I use Backbone/MarionetteJS.
