Well, actually it *can* hurt. It takes time and effort to try out a new language or package or platform. So... you first gotta decide if it's a reasonable prospect for your problem space. If the answer is yes, *then* you try it out - on a pilot basis with something that's small enough that you can explore the technology and get a real understanding of it on a legitimate sample problem, but with some control over the time and risk involved. That said, I think it's significantly easier to learn and try out Rails than it is to learn Zope, so if this team has competent python/zope skills they shouldn't have too much trouble picking up rails.
