Have to miss this month's meeting, I'm out of town this week, but would like
to put in a plug for Hal Fulton's "The Ruby Way".

I'm still only partway through my copy of the 2nd edition, but I like it
quite a lot. I think it fills a nice niche in a Ruby technical library:
something of a cookbook style, but with a lot more substance - some very
good discussions of idioms, style and techniques, and underlying reasons for
why to do things certain ways.

I generally suggest Programming Ruby (the essential "pickaxe" book) and
David Black's Ruby for Rails for initially learning Ruby; Fulton's book
would be the one I'd suggest as a followon, after you know the basics and
want to become a more effective Ruby programmer that comes from a deeper
understanding of the language and how to use it effectively.
