I just finished installing ActiveMerchant into my app and it's working beautifully. It took a little longer than expected to setup because the merchant gateway we use isn't supported out of the box. So, I had to take pieces of the default gateways and construct my own. In some places, ActiveMerchant seems a bit overly complex and there's a lot of functionality that I don't use. Still, it seems stable and a good choice to support any future development I need it for.
One thing to watch out for when validating a credit card, ActiveMerchant will return an Invalid Card error if you pass in a type of "mastercard". It expects "master". Go figure.
