[Sdruby] CRUD and has_many => :through

I (am attempting to) have a relationship between Users and Books through Reads. I feel confident that I have the models/tables set up correctly, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the way to create a User and Read when creating a new user. In my case, there are only a handful of books so having the user select which books they've read upon signup makes sense.
My inclination is to do the @user.save and do a Read.create for each book selected, but I'm wondering if there's a better approach? I'm pretty new do this, and would appreciate any tips.
