Hi Richard,

I would suggest that you work on some sketches/wireframes before contacting
a designer. Designers are different than us developers. They are not really
into abstract concepts and are usually very visual. Also, you don't need to
be a designer to create a sketch.

You should probably check on Amy Hoy's presentation at the RailsConf07:
http://slash7.com/

Also, if you defined most of your application's behaviors (using user
stories) the designer should be able to grasp the concept of your
application and might help you creating an awesome UI that will make your
app the best app ever :)

Good luck,

-Matt

Can anyone offer tips on developing Rails apps and
working with Web designers?

I'm building my first serious Web application with
Rails and I'm thinking about getting a Web designer
involved early rather than later. It's for a
scientific application so I'm not looking for fancy
graphics or effects.

What should I make sure to do/know before talking to a
designer and what should I avoid doing or worrying
about?

Thanks,
Rich
