Last month during me informal survey and discussion about how people are serving up their Rails apps we talked briefly about Apache's mod_proxy_balance. I'm pretty sure I was supposed to follow up on that (sorry) and post some links that where relevant. Basically the symptoms are as follows:
After you restart Mongrel, especially if you do migrations, Apache still gives proxy timeouts until Apache is restarted. If there are long requests on a mongrel process, other requests will pile up behind it instead of being moved off to the other mongrels.
