[1] "CA blames typographical problem for earnings error"
Computer Associates blamed an overstatement in its fiscal 2001 profit
last month on a typographical error. The explanation, made in two
press statements and a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
filing, follows media claims that the mainframe software company had
overstated sales and profits for years so that new products appeared
to have sold more quickly.

[2] "IBM VP touts Linux for diverse infrastructures"
Irving Wladawsky-Berger, vice president of technology and strategy
for IBM, told a group attending the Merrill Lynch Hardware Technology
Conference in New York last week that Linux would help them address a
number of their corporate infrastructure issues. The integration of
legacy systems is so important and Linux can help address the need
for better integration and flexibility, he said.

[4] "Recurring gains?"
An analyst contends that earnings are what's keeping Big Blue's
shares afloat. He warns that investors should be wary of this happy
earnings picture, however. A fair amount of the earnings gains in
2000 had nothing to do with the strength in IBM's business
operations, he says.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"New front in divorce wars: Online visitation rights"
Divorce cases have always been a delicate balancing act for judges.
Now, technology has added a new twist. A recent New Jersey ruling set
a precedent that paves the way for "virtual visitations" in cases in
which a custodial parent seeks to move away from the area where the
"ex" lives. Advocates of the practice say online contact - through
Web cams, instant messaging and e-mail - is a constructive way for
noncustodial parents to stay in contact with their kids.
Fathers-rights boosters beg to differ. They argue that online
technology can never replace a hug.
