LEAD STORY:
"Hitachi revenue indicates storage tilt"
With numbers like these, it's clear Hitachi Data Systems is becoming
a major player in the storage sector but is slowly fading away in the
mainframe arena. Of the $1.6 billion in revenue the Hitachi
subsidiary pulled last year, 75% of it came from storage products
while mainframe revenue accounted for just 5%. Upshot: Its storage
revenue grew 55% in one year.

[2] "IBM analysts ponder CEO swan song"
Is Lou Gerstner's reign as the head of IBM coming to a close? The
CEO's contract expires in March 2002, and at the age of 59--just one
year away from the age when all senior IBM executives retired over
the last 30 years--he isn't likely to renew it, insiders speculate.

[3] "Microsoft attacks the open-source roots of Linux"
It comes as no surprise, really, but Microsoft says it has no
intention of supporting open-source systems. In fact, one Microsoft
executive all but declared war on open source, calling it a dangerous
way to create software because it makes it impossible for anyone to
make money or to protect their intellectual property rights.

database, IBM's got a new version of its own database? The new
iterations, in fact, will be available within a week of each other;
DB2 will ship on June 8 and Oracle 9i will reach general availability
on June 14.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Quirky inventory cataloged online"
Not every dot-com with an offbeat business model is dead. Take the
online version of Philip Cable's American Science & Surplus, for
instance. The brick-and-mortar version of the catalog business is
chugging along after more than 60 years by selling everything from
recycled camera batteries to "owl pellets" -- the stuff left over
after an owl eats a small woodland creature. Cable is taking a
measured approach to selling his junk, er, wares to online shoppers.
He doesn't expect to make millions; he's just looking to expand
beyond his offline customer base.
