LEAD STORY:
"IBM, Japanese companies to promote upgraded Linux"
IBM has joined forces with computer makers Fujitsu, Hitachi and NEC
to upgrade existing Linux-based operating systems for enterprise
customers using mainframes. Although the companies compete in
developing and marketing mainframe computers, the group says it's
teaming up to cut the costs to develop new operating systems by
opting to upgrade the existing Linux OS.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Hormel is resigned to use of 'spam' in Net slang"
Sure, it's side-splittingly funny when a bunch of Vikings sing a
chorus of "Spam, spam, spam, spam..." but who can blame the folks at
Hormel for getting a little edgy every time the name of their most
famous brand of "meat" product is used to denote something most email
users despise? Still, Hormel has decided not to buck popular culture
and says it will no longer fight as aggressively to stamp out the
derogatory use of the term spam. They only ask that when using the
word to describe their luncheon meat, the word be capitalized so that
the terms can be more easily distinguished. Perhaps a better
differentiator is this: One you eat. The other you delete.
