[1] "Something old, something new"
When the Swedish National Road Administration needed to replace its
mainframe system, it didn't opt for a Windows or Unix-based
distributed system but another mainframe - a Unisys ClearPath Plus
CS7000 to be exact. This story explores why writing off mainframes as
"legacy" could lead an organization to prematurely write off a
valuable asset.

[2] "IBM and HDS swap programming code for storage servers"
IBM and Hitachi Data Systems have taken interoperability to the next
level. The competing storage vendors have agreed to give each other
access to the Application Programming Interfaces for their enterprise
storage servers. The deal will let users use the same software on the
IBM Shark and HDS Lightning.

[3] "IBM continues courting ISVs, expands BroadVision alliance"
IBM's expanded alliance with BroadVision could put the pinch on BEA
Systems since BEA's WebLogic competes with IBM's WebSphere in the
application server market. IBM has formed numerous alliances with
ISVs in the last year in an effort to bolster its software sales by
tying its middleware products to big-selling applications from such
vendors as Siebel Systems, Peoplesoft, Ariba and J.D. Edwards.

[4] "The new Big Blue"
In his eight years at the helm of IBM, Lou Gerstner has completely
remade the company, brought the stock price up 874% and turned Big
Blue into one of the most influential tech companies of the new
millennium. That will be a tough act to follow for Sam Palmisano,
president and chief operating officer, who many see as Gerstner's
heir apparent.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Bread as a display device - we have pictures"
The Java toaster has made its debut. At the JavaOne Conference in San
Francisco, a Brunel University design student unveiled the appliance,
which uses an embedded Java device to access the weather forecast,
then burns the appropriate weather symbol onto a piece of toast. It
may seem pointless, but this imaginative appliance could soon turn
food into the hottest new advertising medium. Well, maybe not, but
let's toast the accomplishment anyway.
