The Resourcefulness of Middle Tiers | by Jim Keohane

Middle tiers (MT) can quickly assemble and synopsize relevant data,
ascertain criticality, assign limited resources, etc. with the intent
of maximizing service and responsiveness before passing on web
requests to the mainframe tier 1. MT usually has cpu cycles to spare
whereas the mainframe has the comparatively pea-sized
brain of a hulking dinosaur. So shouldn't the MT being doing the
conversion, translation, parsing, caching, validation, compression,
encryption, etc. where worthwhile?

For Some Web Needs: "UDP - You da Man!" | by Jim Keohane

Years ago I recall telling some of the developers under me to stop
looking at source code and instead play some computer games. Today,
I can make almost the same recommendation to Internet developers but
for an even better reason. If a mainframe developer can follow and
appreciate the discussions of serious network game developers,
they'll see how it brings a needed perspective.

Which brings us to UDP (User Datagram Protocol), the underappreciated
sibling of TCP (Transmission Control Program).

Web Adventures of NetRexx, the Wonder Code! | by Jim Keohane

IBM Fellow Mike Cowlishaw's NetRexx, based on his Rexx scripting
language, was designed as a simpler but complete alternative to Java.
Applications, applets and servlets for any Java Virtual Machine (JVM)
can be done in NetRexx with less coding and in less time. Java
classes and beans are easily accessible. Mainframers already familiar
with decades-old Rexx can leverage that expertise on upcoming web
development. And it's FREE!
