SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC TOGETHER | by Jim
Keohane

How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

Practice? Naaah! Lead collaboratively!

There is a organizational methodology called the "Orpheus Process"
that sprang from the classical music world: the conductorless Orpheus
Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The "Orpheus
Process" is now making inroads into the business world. I see
potential applicability to software development. So might you.

CODE RAGE: GETTING BLAMED FOR TRAFFIC (CPU) SLOWDOWN | by Jim Keohane

You are incensed that the Strobe CPU performance monitor indicates
your simple and elegant code as a performance bottleneck. But it is.
You can't believe someone else's horribly obtuse and convoluted
revisions to your code, though much faster, are an acceptable answer.
You positively cringe at the future maintenance issues after seeing
the assembler routine version, though fastest by far, that was
lovingly handcrafted by the resident bit-twiddler in a non-intuitive
use of esoteric machine instructions.

Calm down. Take a chill pill. In some cases, you have to make a trade
off.

DFSSMSdfp SYSTEM MANAGED BUFFERING (SMB) AND 'ACCBIAS=SYSTEM' | by
Bob Burns

Use of DFSSMSdfp System Managed Buffering (SMB) can sometimes reduce
a batch application's CPU consumption and I/Os significantly. SMB is
currently limited to extended VSAM KSDS files that use VSAM NSR
buffering. There are a number of SMB (ACCBIAS) options that you can
specify via JCL and one option ('ACCBIAS=SYSTEM') that can be used in
SMS Data Classes. Find out what some of these options are.

THIS WEEK'S FEATURED BOOK | search390 Bookstore

Title: Concepts of Programming Languages 5/e
Author: Robert W. Sebesta

The fifth edition of this book continues the approach that has made
it the undisputed market leader. It describes fundamental concepts of
programming languages by presenting design issues of the various
language constructs, examining the design choices for these
constructs in a few common languages, and critically comparing the
design alternatives.
