;) For years, many have been predicting the death of COBOL as a programming language. With the advent of e-business and e-commerce, many experts have predicted that Java and XML, for example, will replace COBOL altogether and lead the mainframe into the future. Not so, says IBM software engineer and search390 site expert Tom Ross. Although Java has many great features and is good for Web enabling legacy applications, Tom believes that COBOL may actually be around long after Java because it has such a huge installed code base. "Sure, Java is hot, sexy and gets all the press, but we heard for years that COBOL would be replaced." So, what do those of you working with COBOL think about its future? If you'd like to share your thoughts with Tom on the subject, or have any questions related to programming with COBOL, join Tom Ross in our Developer discussion forum on Tues, January 22 from 2:00 PM EST to 4:00 PM. Tom will be there live to answer your questions and share his thoughts on COBOL, or rather, the "language of the future", as he likes to call it. If you'd like to get a head start and post a question for Tom now, go right ahead. Have a nice week. |

search390 member dkuzma posted the following in the OS forum and needs your help: "We are moving from OS/390 2.6 and CICS TS 1.2 to OS/390 2.10 and CICS TS 1.3. We came across a problem: PL/I programs sending maps send along some characters that don't belong to them and programs stop. We tried to solve the problem by creating an Application Specific Run-Time Options Module using members CEEUOPT and CEEWUOPT from LE library CEE.SCEESAMP (modifying STORAGE = (NONE, NONE, NONE, 8K) to STORAGE = (00,00,00,8K)) and then putting our user library before CEE.SCEERUN library in the STEPLIB concatenation of the CICS job but it didn't help. Can anyone help by suggesting what are possible causes of this error?" Think you know what is causing dkuzma's problem? If so, please share your thought and suggestions. ManuelCR is getting an SMS internal error (Message IEC036I - 002-A4) in reading the PDSE Directory. "Generally this comes after a successful IEBCOPY. The library is a LOADLIB with applications programs and is managed by LLA. Actually the error also occurred after a F LLA, UPDATE, after changes to that library." Got advice for Manuel? Post it here if you do: |

| Tip of the Week: |
| The recent tip "How You're Gonna Keep'em Down On The PARM Once They've Coded In C" left some asking for more. Here's a simpler and more generic variant consisting of 2 assembler programs that should provide less issues than a COBOL or C version. |
