LEAD STORY | Merger sparks interest in Linux product.

Linux is getting a big push in New Zealand. Software distributor
Base10 Technology is adding Caldera OpenLinux to its portfolio, while
Caldera Systems is buying the server software and professional
services divisions of The Santa Cruz Operation (SCO), whose
commercial Unix Base10 already distributes.

OS/VS COBOL LICENCES DROPPING? | by Tom Ross

Dear Ask the Expert,
I have heard that the number of OS/VS COBOL licenses are dropping.
How many or what percentage of COBOL Programs are OS/VS COBOL in the
market place? Have any surveys been done or has IBM made any of this
information available? How long do we have until they will no longer
work?

CICS TRAN-O-SERVICE REXX | by Jim Keohane

REXX for CICS (a.k.a. CICS/REXX) has been around since '94. IBM
dropped it in '97 but later introduced a new version in 1999. It's
now an integral part of CICS TS (Transaction Services). For some
reason it's largely still a secret. Why? Beats me.

DOW FOR ANY DATE | by search390 user John Sleight Jr.

In recent versions of COBOL we were given the ability to determine
the day of week for the current day via the ACCEPT DATE function. A
number from 0 to 6 was returned to signify the DOW from Sunday (0)
thru Saturday (6). Sadly this ability was restricted to the current
date. The code snippet presented below will provide the same function
for any date.

THE MISSING LINK | Surfing only sixth in time-wasting stakes

Killing time at work is an art form, and the advent of the Internet
added a palette of new colors to the mix. But the Net is hardly the
root of all office dilly-dallying, at least not in the U.K. A
recent survey found that making tea, gossiping, cleaning the
cubicle, reading the paper and even gazing out the window were more
popular time killers than Web surfing. In the battle of windows
versus Windows, this round goes to the former.
