LEAD STORY | The Home Depot's latest project: XML, Web services

Home Depot developed its own sales system application software in
order to get the functionality and flexibility it needed by using
Java-based architecture. At the core of The Home Depot's development
strategy are a mainframe, XML for defining data to be shared between
applications and Web services for breaking up monolithic applications
into reusable components.

COMPUTER PROFITS HITS HIGH END OF TARGET | News: Reuters
Mainframe software maker Compuware reported lower fiscal
third-quarter net income but hit the top end of its guidance, as
mainframe deals, which fell the past two quarters, began to rebound.
The company's fourth quarter is traditionally a strong quarter for
its sales of mainframe software and services.

ASIAN ENTERPRISES EMBRACING LINUX | News: ZDNet Asia
While Windows is still the market leader in server operating systems,
a growing number of firms in Asia are cutting costs by using Linux.

ANALYST: AOL MERGER WOULD DESTROY RED HAT LINUX | News: NewsFactor
Internet giant AOL Time Warner is said to be in talks to purchase
Linux distributor Red Hat. Although the reasons behind the possible
acquisition remain unspecified, analysts have suggested that AOL may
be attempting to better position itself for a drawn-out battle with
Microsoft.

IBM DEALS FOCUS ON SERVERS, SERVICES | News: CNET
Big Blue said it is investing in MontaVista Software, maker of a
Linux operating system variant for PowerPC processors, and has signed
a deal with MatrixOne, which sells software that helps companies
design and manage the life cycle of new products. IBM also announced
an alliance with International Business Systems. The deals, while
different in nature, will promote several areas of crucial interest
for IBM, including its Global Services division, servers and
semiconductors.

SUPPLY CHAIN ALLIANCE TARGETS OVERHEADS | News: cw360
IBM and supply chain specialist IBS have formed an alliance to
incorporate IBS' Virtual Enterprise Supply Chain collaboration
software with IBM middleware products, eServer and IBM Global

******** SPONSORED BY SOFTWARE DIVERSIFIED SERVICES *******
I'd like to introduce the premier TCP/IP and SNA performance monitor,
Vital Signs VisionNet (VSV). VSV is the only monitor with a single,
central repository capable of reporting on both OS/390 (or z/OS) and
non-OS/390 devices. VSV provides detailed reports on TCP/IP status,
FTP, CSM efficiency, Socket activity, and Telnet activity, at
considerably lower prices than competing products. For your free

BEST WEB LINKS | Networking and Communications

We would say that networking is the most complex part of mainframe
computer operations. That's why we've assembled a collection of
sources under "Network Management" that describe the essentials of
developing an enterprise-wide network. Select "SNA" or TCP/IP" to
find detailed information on those common network architectures.

THE MISSING LINK | Fibre rolled out down London's drains

As if there weren't enough fiber moving through the sewers of London!
A startup LAN provider is using the city's sewer system to create its
new fibre access network. Hey, why let a good sewer go entirely to,
um, waste? The company's CEO says the septic solution is perfect
because most of the work is already done. All the company has to do
is screw duct cable to the sewer pipes, most of which run right up to
the edge of buildings in London's business districts.
