Linux on the mainframe. A Linux-only mainframe. I'm guessing you've heard these two phrases mentioned quite a bit lately, but what do you really think of all the Linux hype? I had the chance to speak with some users at the recent SHARE conference in Nashville, and although there seemed to be quite a buzz surrounding the open source operating system, I was unable to find a bunch of you actually using Linux. When I did, I heard things like, "we chose Linux for consolidation" and "so far so good." However, when I asked one person if he trusted Linux running his most mission critical applications, he said "heck no, not yet."
Do you feel the same way in regard to mission critical applications? If you're running Linux on your mainframe, please share your thoughts, positive or negative. For those of you running Linux on the mainframe in the New England area, I'd like to come visit you. Send me an email and let me know where your company is located--I'd love to meet some of you folks in person and talk about your Linux experiences.
Here's my email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Have a great week. I look forward to hearing from you.
BJ

| Tip of the Week: |
| This time, Jim's developer tip not only concerns "thinking outside the box" when crafting algorithms but also delves into proper comportment during technical interviews! It could be subtitled "Why smart alecks don't get job offers!" The tip shows that there are many ways in programming to skin a cat, and the first you think of probably isn't the best. |
